Coordinates and linear graphs

Slope is a rate. Students compute m from two points, graph y = mx + c from slope and intercept, handle horizontal (slope 0) and vertical (undefined slope) lines, and read slope and intercept in a story such as water draining.

Part no. is the node's id; the realm is the kind of math; qty is how many practice items it carries.

Students can

m=y2y1x2x1m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}; graph from slope and intercept; y=ky=k (slope 0) and x=hx=h (undefined slope); read slope and intercept in a story.

Ready when

they graph y=12x+3y=-\frac12 x+3 and say what 1/2-1/2 and 33 mean in “water draining.”

Formulas

Slope
m=y2y1x2x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}
Slope-intercept
y=mx+cy = mx + c

Watch for

m=x2x1y2y1m=\frac{x_2-x_1}{y_2-y_1}; vertical line called slope 0.
